Criteria
Our Criteria
A history of collaboration
If a candidate can work effectively with other candidates across a wide range of topics, even if they disagree in big ways, then good things will get done. If a candidate can’t collaborate, it doesn’t matter how great their ideas, nothing happens.
A record of achievement
In many ways, this is simply proof of the first point. Has a candidate accomplished things they set out to do and witnessed real results? If so, they know how to work with people.
Real-life applicable experience
This experience could take many forms, of course, but it is crucial. As much as we love optimism and enthusiasm, it means so much more when it is tempered by experience.
Demonstration of fiscal responsibility
Ability to inquire, judge, and ensure responsible budgets is an important skill set, especially when it comes at city scale.
Broad-based mindset
With the varied and interwoven challenges we face, we can’t afford to staff City Council with single-issue candidates. We need people who are looking out for the whole of Portland, with a nuanced understanding of how interconnected this community needs to be.
Our Process
12 for PDXers reviewed publicly available information on all announced candidates to assess their record and demonstration of collaboration, real accomplishments, relevant life experiences, fiscal responsibility, and broad-based mindset.
Each district cohort discussed and ranked candidates to compile a list of semifinalists.
Scheduled face to face interviews with semi-finalists where candidates addressed a comprehensive set of questions.
Upon completion of semifinalist interviews, 12 for PDXers came together to assess and debate all candidates and finalized our endorsed slate.
Announce our endorsement list publicly on September 5, 2024.
